Singing trio JYJ will be named goodwill ambassadors to the United Nation's program for HIV/AIDS, according to their promoter Prain Inc. on Thursday.
A press release by Prain stated that JYJ will be appointed goodwill ambassadors for UNAIDS' Asia-Pacific region during the 10th International Congress on AIDS in Asia and the Pacific (ICAAP10) to be held in Korea's second-largest city of Busan tomorrow.
UNAIDS chose JYJ with the belief that due to their high popularity in the region, they will be able to serve as an effective channel for delivering proper and correct knowledge on AIDS, Prain explained in the statement.
The organizing committee of ICAAP10, of which JYJ is promotional ambassadors, was quoted as saying, "We're looking forward to the consensus on fighting AIDS in Asia to be expanded through JYJ's appointment as goodwill ambassador for UNAIDS."
JYJ will be the first Koreans to take part in the cause -- global figures such as Her Serene Highness Princess Stephanie of Monaco and Hollywood actress Naomi Watts are currently UNAIDS goodwill ambassadors.
JYJ, composed of members Park Yuchun, Kim Jaejoong and Kim Junsu, were formerly of quintet TVXQ, K-pop's most popular and succesful boy band in the Asia region.
They broke off from the group however and started a separate singing career in October 2010 for which they have continued to promote themselves back home and overseas. They have also led careers in acting and musicals.
